ayurveda

Ayurveda is a natural system of medicine originating in India and dating back more than 5000 years. The name is derived from the Sanskrit words ‘Ayur’ meaning life and ‘Veda’ meaning ‘Science or Knowledge’. Ayurveda is the ‘Science of Life’.

For the sceptics among you, and I say this having been a sceptic myself when I embarked on my own healing journey, it is perhaps worth considering that while Ayurveda stems from a time thousands of years before modern medicine, leading many to consider it at first glance to be outdated, but it remains in favour and is still widely practiced throughout the world due to one key factor:

Modern medical understanding and numerous studies continue to confirm that the conclusions drawn by the ancient originators when diagnosing and improving health and wellbeing have turned out to be startlingly close to those drawn by modern medicine thousands of years later. For this reason, Ayurveda continues to find relevance and widespread use to this day.

The ancient sages may not have had all the answers or the tools we have now, but it took thousands of years for modern medicine to catch up.

To learn more about how this ancient system with its unfamiliar concepts works and how it can still help you in the modern era, read on…

Ayurveda considers everything in the universe, including human beings, to be composed of five basic elements: Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. In combination these elements create the three bio-physical forces, or ‘doshas’ that govern the human body:

  • Vata – Air & Space

  • Pitta – Fire & Water

  • Kapha – Water & Earth

Collectively they are known as the Tridoshic system which governs all of our biological, physical and psychological functions in mind and body, and how an individual interacts with the world around them.

At Ayurveda’s core is the concept that all people are born with their own unique constitution incorporating different proportions of each of the doshas. There is often one dominant dosha with perhaps some elements of one or two of the other doshas. This combination and its proportions are known as your ‘Prakriti’. This key philosophical concept of Prakriti within Ayurveda is that your particular combination of doshas that you are born with is the combination to maintain to have good health and mental wellbeing.  However, as we move through life external influences can shift the balance in our doshas with influences such as diet, lifestyle, stress and disease disrupting our unique doshic balance and resulting in detrimental effects to our Prakriti. This unbalanced state, known by the ancient practitioners as Vikriti, manifests itself in poor physical and psychological health.

Whereas modern medicine will usually prescribe drugs as the form of corrective treatment, Ayurveda has a holistic approach that considers all factors in a person’s lifestyle in order to help re-balance their dosha’s and restore their equilibrium and Prakriti.

Ayurveda seeks to heal the mind and body by analysing the current imbalances and developing a treatment plan that may recommend dietary and lifestyle changes, herbal remedies, targeted yoga plans, techniques to change behaviours and mindset to reduce Vikriti (imbalance) and restore Prakriti.

Ayurvedic Consultancy

I offer an in-depth consultancy service to establish and diagnose your current tridoshic imbalance, your Vikriti, and your natural balance, your Prakriti, which we would seek to restore.  The diagnosis requires a tongue diagnosis, optional pulse diagnosis and a session to work through a life history questionnaire together.  From this I will compile a detailed and personal report that will include all the information and guidance you require to achieve better mental health and physical wellbeing by bringing mind and body back into balance.

The report will include details of how to detoxify your body if it is found that excessive toxins or ‘ama’ are playing a key part in your Vikriti, as well as recommendations for specific herbal remedies and changes to diet to maintain a reduced level of toxins in your body.

Dietary advice will be specifically tailored to your own balance of doshas, as well your own personal tastes, and will be delivered with recommendations for particular food combinations that will serve to improve your health and a series of seasonally varied recipes that will help you maintain your Prakriti.

You will also receive a suggested yoga sequence that is sensitive to your current imbalances.

This is a personal one to one service. Due to its very personal nature it requires an investment of your time and honesty to complete successfully. Our sessions together can be carried out in person or remotely via video conferencing. Our entire consultation will be treated with the strictest confidentiality and the resulting report will be delivered both electronically and as a printed copy for your future reference.
